Matthew William “Mat” Kearney was born on December 1, 1978 in Eugene Oregon. He went to California State University in Chico, California in an athletic scholarship with literature as his major. Kearney became interested in music after going to Nashville with producer Robert Marvin. It was there when he began writing his own songs.

Kearney got caught up with too much party in college and while in an interview, he said that he lived up and did what everyone told him that he should do in college but he discovered quickly that it was all in vain and the depth of depravity that lifestyle has. There he understood that there was more to life and God found him in his lowest point of his life.

Mat Kearney released his first album entitled “Bullet”. This album contains 11 tracks which were also remade for his second album entitled “Nothing Left to Lose”. From that point, he started to incorporate spoken word or rap with guitar playing in coffee shops. This was when he met his producer Robert Marvin. On 2006, Kearney produced his album entitled “Nothing Left to Lose”. This album sold 450,000 copies worldwide. Kearney toured with John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Mutemath, Train and Cary Brothers to promote this album.

The title track “Nothing Left to Lose” got the number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold over 500,000 copies winning Kearney numerous BMI Awards. Another song from this album that was really a hit song was the track “All I Need” which was featured in the hit shows NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy and was included in iTunes top 100 downloaded songs.

In 2009, Kearney released his album “City of Black and White” released through Columbia Records. This album featured great talents such as Matthew Perryman Jones, Kate York, Paul Moak, Josiah Bell and Trent Dabbs. The single “Closer to Love” was widely accepted and widely played in both the secular and Christian outlets. Kearney toured with the band Keane and the Helio Sequence, also with Owl City in “All Things Bright and Beautiful tour” to promote his album “City of Black and White”.

By 2011, Kearney released his album “Young Love” with the single “Hey Mama” which charter in the top 40 of Adult Pop songs at the 22nd spot. The single “Down” bagged the 23rd spot in the Christian Songs chart.

Mat Kearney’s music is also featured in a number of television series such as Kyle XY, Without a Trace, Jericho, Friday Night Lights, Wildfire, South Beach, Dirty Sexy Money, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, 30 Rock and the Vampire Diaries. Soul Surfer utilized his song “Runaway” as their movie soundtrack.

Mat uses and prefers to use his Martin D 28 or his Gibson Hummingbird as his guitar. He is usually seen using his Gibson Hummingbird early in his career but was noticeably using his Martin D 28 from the point where he toured with Keane until now.
